What is the SNHS?

The Spanish National Honor Society is also known as the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH). It was established in 1953 and lives by the motto, “¡Todos a una!” (“All Together for One Goal)”.

It is an honor society that welcomes high school students enrolled in Spanish and Portuguese classes. It is also sponsored by the by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. AATSP recognizes the SNHS as an elite organization that significantly contributes to the growth of Spanish culture and diversity.

 

What is the purpose of the SNHS?

The primary purpose of the SNHS is to recognize the achievement of its student members in Spanish and Portuguese languages. The group also aims to inspire its members to continue their interest in the studies.

 

What are the benefits of joining SNHS?

The SNHS is more than just a group that highlights the Spanish culture. It opens many doors of opportunities to its members while in school and afterward. For one, being an active member increases your chances of getting into your dream university. Plus, SNHS can help you gain access to scholarship and grants.

Part of SNHS’s advocacy is to improve the lives of people. It organizes service projects all year round both locally and globally. Its student members provide mentoring programs for those who can’t afford it. Furthermore, they also conduct outreach programs and seasonal activities for others.

How does one become part of SNHS?

SNHS memberships are offered to high school students who meet certain requirements. Here are some you need to take note of:

  • Minimum cumulative average of 3.0
  • Posses A’s and B’s in Spanish classes
  • Currently enrolled in a Spanish class at or above Spanish 4
  • Should actively participate in events and meetings
  • Should remain enrolled in a Spanish class upon senior year
  • Miss no more than 2 meetings each semester
  • Should meet 80% of meeting attendance
  • Serve or provide tutoring sessions for 7 hours during the first year and 20 hours during the subsequent years
  • Be a positive influence in school
  • Should not receive any discipline referrals
  • Should not breach the Academic Honesty Code
